Decider Better Together

Making any decision actually means making two decisions—the decision itself, and how you will decide. All too often, teams will default to one or two ways of deciding: either everyone will have to agree, or a leader will make the call. This might be fine for a small team, but as your team scales, it can lead to challenges like:

  • Bottlenecks. Getting everyone to sign off takes too long, and the compromises you have to make become too painful or water down the end result. Putting all the decision-making responsibilities on the leader, meanwhile, slows progress as they’re not always available.

  • Misalignment. People get demotivated because it feels like the “rules” around decision-making are always changing. For instance, a team’s decision may later be revoked because the leader ultimately had authority, or a leader’s decision frustrates another leader because they weren’t consulted. Not only do these habits cause frustration, they also slow the speed of work, as people don’t know whether a decision is truly final.

That’s why it’s so important for you and your team to have open conversations about the decision-making process. When can someone make a unilateral decision? Who should weigh in?
